ABSTRACT: Water quality within the discharge area of the Patos Lagoon are analysed through the use of in situ data and Landsat thematic mapper images. Hydrological studies were carried out during 1982/83, with monthly cruises covering the area and for 1984, when time series of velocity of the water currents and tides were recorded, in both cases coincident with llitecoverage. Cross correlation techniques were applied in order to determine the significant time lag between water levei and current velocity. Thematic maps showing the qualitative seasonal distribution of the water masses of the studied arca were analysed through the images. Significant correlations were obtained between the in situ and digitaliged image data. The resulte varied for each parameter, spectral band and hydrological situation. The difficulties caused by the situation when there is no coincidence between the satellite coverage and in situ data acquisition is discussed. Cross correlation resulte showed a significant (R=0 3 95) correspondence between water levei and current velocity for a time lag of 6-7 hours. The astronomical tide, whose amplitude varies from 10-15 cm and represente 8-10% of the total variation, can not be neglected even in periods of high river flow. The thematic maps obtained from band 3 are those which best represent the qualitative distribution of the water masses in the studied arca. High water mace heterogeneity is observed during autumn and summer, while during winter and spring only those water masses derived from the Mirim and Patos Lagoon are observed. In this case an estuarine front is generated and may extend out to the inner coastal shelf cone. Highly significant correlations were obtained through the analysis of in situ and digital data. It must be pointed out that the results have varied for each parameter, spectral interval, hydrological situation, and as a function of the time interval between the sampling cruises and the satellite coverage of the arca. Besides it is observed that the correiations are Zinked to the aspects of simultaneity between satellite and in situ data, the hydrological changes and to the stability of the considered parameters. It must be noted that the values of the correlations obtained for the summer image (At=25h) is lower than that ~ned for autumn (At=4days) considering principally the SM and transparency. Through the analysis of salinity data it was possible to obtain some algorithms which can be used for future work, even though not in a definitive way. Some considerations are made of the difficulties caused by the fact that the in situ analises were carried out in situations~,e the data available for analysis were not coincident in time with the images taken by the satellite.
